Kyri wandered aimlessly around the forest, sometimes picking up something she considered a
bit useful and often fending off an animal or even plant attack, but mostly today she was
pondering, this bout of self intellectual wrestling had started after overhearing a pair in
conversation about whether or not free folk could be trusted, the idea at first had shocked
her, why anyone would think she could betray anyone to anyone seemed strange, but the more
it rolled around her mind the more of their point of view she could understand, after all
she had decided to walk a path that meant where tribal war was concerned she stood aside
and to either of the two sides in the conflict that had to seem questionable, and the more
she thought about it the more her loyalties would be in question, at least from an outside
point of view.
Kyri looked out from the edge of the forest across a river and out over the plains beyond
she absently skimmed some stones across the slow moving waters surface, something huge and
terrible gave chase and broke the calm in a tumult of chaotic splashing, she watched as the
water slowly calmed before stepping back into the forest, her mind went back to pondering
it didn`t seem to matter that she had done nothing to raise suspicion, she found herself by
a little spring and stopped to drink.
looking down at herself in the clear water it occured to her she was indeed a bit odd, no
one else she knew of would walk even these fairly safe woodlands without at least leather
armour and it was true that it wasn`t a sensible thing to do, her cotton scraps stitched
and restitched by herself would barely be counted as reasonable clothing in town, offering
no real protection from attack and were useless except as her own tribal fashion sense, but
the world around her was full of odd people each tribe had its own unique oddities.
The vibrant coloured markings that covered nearly all of her exposed skin reflected back at
her from the pool, how she knew to make them was a mystery to her which plants and minerals
made various dyes was just knowledge ingrained in her brain, again she wondered where she
had come from and what it had been like, she daydreamed of ancient forests far away dark,
vast and mysterious for a while she could almost smell it, this wildness within her was a
part of her from before "The Sleep", Leafborn she may be by birth but Forestborn by heart
maybe that had something to do with her becoming Freefolk, it was more to ponder over.
She thought back on the conversation that had sparked her days thoughts, "can the Freefolk
be trusted?" one had whispered fearfully, she didn`t consider Freefolk as a faction to be
trusted or not for her it simply meant she wasn`t in either of the two warring factions, to
her mind after meeting people from the eight tribes she knew of, there were likable and dis-
likable in all tribes, but considering herself factionless wouldn`t mean others would see
her as such, and why should they? no one was under any obligation to accept her, it would
be foolish to expect it, after all she had no memory of who she was before a few weeks ago,
no one did, at least no one she knew of, well maybe those oracles and mystics living up on
the mountain but they never gave a straight answer to anything and generaly just confused
people even more, she had stopped wasting her time asking them for anything but training in
the ancient arts.
No she would expect no quarter and be greatful if any were given, she would have no part in
the conflict to come but would willingly help any who asked for aid to survive the beasts
and dangerous lands they now inhabited, she would let her instincts lead her and trust the
temple singers to guide her back when needed and let each walk the path they chose as they
liked, she took a deep breath and smiled she felt free.
