She opened her eyes and looked around, the wooden walls of the small room were unfamiliar, bodies lay in neat lines she reached and touched the body nearest to her, it was hard almost frozen, she sat up to get a better look at her suroundings, there was a hatch above and a small door to the left, the whole room moved it didnt feel right, though the movement was soothing she tried to remember something anything, all she had was her name.
Kyri, it didnt seem much, she stood slowly her ragged cotton garments hung from her small frame a wooden tube rolled across the planks where she laid she picked it up it was light, she had no memory of it, she moved toward the door her hand hovered by the latch then opened at a short coridor with a few doors either side and a steep stairway at the end, she moved up the stairs and pushed at the hatch, it opened sunlight streamed down.
Stepping out onto the deck of the ship, a loud voice made her turn sharply, a large man stood looking at her, he none of what he said made sense, but there seemed nothing to do but make herself useful, she shivered in the wind and hoped to find something warmer soon, she looked at the hollow tube and didn`t put much faith in it, prehaps if she could get a point on it...
Now to see what tomorrow would bring...

Second Steps
The boat ride, or "fine ship" as The Captain prefered it be called, was more eventful than she thought it would be, people were busy choping, slicing and in a few cases chomping on the many rats and cockroaches that also called the "fine ship" home, Kyri rather enjoyed cracking rats skulls with her hollow tube untill a kindly shipmate showed her how to use it properly.
The occasional seagull would land on the deck and attempt to carry some poor soul off and apparently an amorous squid had taken an interest in the vessel, sending up the odd tenticle to woo said interest, given the vast amount of slashing and chopping that failed to put off its advances, the poor thing must have suffered greatly in the endless waters, all of which were followed by much swabbing of decks, which was another way of saying wash the slime off while skinning your knuckles on the rough deck.
As the ship sailed on more people woke from the sleep spell, by and large a happy jolly lot, but roumors started that some of the crew were not happy and thought the Captian was leading the ship to its doom, if what the Captain said about where they had come from was correct and some nag in her mind agreed, then doom would be a step up at least, she didnt think much more about it untill one evening a crew tried introducing a hatchet to her skull, she reacted on instinct , she fearfully reported what happened to the Captain who laughed and told her to do the same to any Mutaneers she came across, the word spread and the muties became hard to find!.
The Captain called a meeting on deck apparently the squid was hanging onto the bottom of the ship, and he had a plan to deal with it once and for all, besides he was tired of the food lately and wanted kamakasi instead, Kyri thought the squid couldn`t taste worse the ships rations and had to better than rat, which some had taken to eating! people gathered and equipment was passed out a kind soul made her some leather armour for which she was eternaly greatful.
At the appionted time the crew lured coaxed and bribed and hauled the creature onto the deck, a great battle ensued, the squid had no intention of allowing itself to become Kamaksi, she beat at the crabs that had somehow been dragged on board, she beat on the squid, slime covered everything, she could bearly see, all was chaos suddenly she realised someone was beating her! she slipped out of the melee greatly bruised and battered, the squid was defeated and once the battle weary finished swinging at each other, the crew set to work and a feast ensued.
It turned out that Kamakasi wasnt half bad, which was good because there was a bloody lot of it!, she lay back contented and sore, drifting over water and off to sleep.
Land Ahoy!!.

Many Steps
Land Ahoy!
Everyone rushed to the side of the ship to get a first glimse of the promised new homeland, Kyri stood still, she could wait, besides she couldn`t see over the heads of most her fellows anyways, true she towered over the Lightfeet, and was taller than the Dwarr, but most of her fellow Leafborn and the Mythos were a head taller, making her head at armpit hieght on a boat where she hadn`t seen much washing going on, except for swabbing, it may have played some small part in keeping her back.
The ship stopped soon enough and she found herself ashore, before she could get her bearings she was piled up with as much as she could carry and pushed off in a line of burdoned fellows, the beach was soon left behind and she quickened her steps to- ward the forest, glorious smells came to her here she was at peace, here was where she belonged and yet she had no memory of seeing anything like it, too soon slopes bare of all but scrubby little trees and plants lay before her.
The others strode onwards before and up, it was a struggle over the rocky trail, looking up her fellows were drawing ahead, she was pushed from behind.
"Comeon slowpoke, camps awaitin" a Dwarr glowered at her then broke into a grin "You never know there may be brew!" he stompped past and up the slope, by the time the top was reached she was sweating, it had dried by the time she dropped off her load, at least there was water she drank greatfully.
The day past fetching wood from the forest below, she was given an axe and spent time selecting the wood to chop, only clearing to make way for stronger growth it came intuitively, gently, after a couple of hours chopping she produced a single useful log, and an awful lot of wood chips, she was pretty useless at cutting logs but had left the area..better.
Trudging up and down the mountian she developed her own mantra to pass the time "I hate bloody mountains" was the rough translation, others laughed at her but it kept her pace up so she no longer lagged behind, what the Dwarr loved so much was a mystery to her, when her final chore was done she washed, cleaned her armour and weapons there was always something else to do.
Done, someone handed her a bowl of stew, it smelled good, sitting at the edge of camp she watched the sun set, shadows falling over the darkening land below and the first stars became visible as night came, so thats what the Dwarr see...

A Cure for Aching Feet
Days past cutting blocks of stones or planks of wood, producing more sweat than usable materials but still she carried on, it was only fair to do what she could, when not destroying valuble resources she was carrying what was useful to where it was needed, at least she hoped it would be useful, nobody said otherwise that was surely a good sign, but her feet hurt, worse was nagging ache or more of a feeling of ill ease.
Having finished carrying she walked back to the camp, she drank and ate and still the ache was there, she looked to the east, she realised that was where she had to go, grabbing gear she set off immediately, sliding down the slopes and into the wild forest, the feeling left her as the leaves closed over her head, faster and deeper into the depths, she knew this was only a small woodland but it was new and fresh, she sat and breathed and rested.
It was too dangerous to fall asleep where she was and there was still much of the day left, searching here and there finding hidey holes and dens, she came across a strange plant, lush and green with dark red veins the strangest thing about it was it attacked her, a leaf swung round and tried to close round her, she fended it off a little surprised, a few smacks with pair of Bastons taught the thing not to mess with her again, or anything else for that matter!.
Later when speaking to the learned, she learned the Giant Venus Flytrap was what it had been called "Don`t bite it, it likes to bite back" a little late for the advice but true none the less, if you could get close enough, it wasnt the only thing she found in the carnivorous wood, Giant Sundews swatted at her, Pitcher plants tried to scoop her up, all in all she loved the place and its fresh smell invigorated her, being very careful about the spot she settled down and slept.
