Ice Explorers quest, assistance request

So I gather that I need to find the location roughly to the south of the ice wall, which has mountains bordering it on the north, east and south.  To meet the requirements of the quest do I "explore" in that location, or "patrol" in that location?  And when I look at the "quest log" will the status of that quest change from "in progress" after I've found the camp?  

Also I've just noticed that I can no longer see the quest when I talk to Smarrgont (see attached screenshot)
