Kyri spent some days in the forest enjoying the freedom and solitude, sometimes she would hear another soul nearby but would either hide while they went by or take a path away from intrusion, it wasn`t that she didn`t like anyone but craved solitude to refresh and enjoy exploring this leafy paradise, ok paradise was pushing things a bit but it was better than the camps noise, muddiness and bustleling, sighing she knew it was time to return, making the trek up to the camp was hard, invigorated and recharged with energy it saddened her to leave the forest and its green protection behind, maybe to others it would be strange to cut themselves off but somehow her soul needed to get away.
The small camp had grown into a small town, well more a village realy, but seemed to her to be very busy, she had soon agreed to go out exploring the area for Rwandi a rather large man, how he had made it up to camp was a mystery to her, even more so how she hadn`t seen him on the ship!, Hojeen had a few things for her to do too, as she readied herself to leave she saw a fellow leafborn she recognised from the ship he had been in the mass that had killed the squid, he was also the one that had told her how to properly use the blowgun, he was waiting in a queue for the food hall, he saw her and waved her over, hesitating for a second then deciding it would be nice to eat something she hadn`t killed or foraged.
"Havn`t seen you around for a while, been here mostly trying to work out what to do next" the tall leafborn seemed confident and at ease here, in this crowd of people.
"After the building of the camp I headed down to the forest, lost track of time" she shrugged, the row of people moved forward he reached between and grabbed a couple of rough wooden bowls, he passed one to her with a smile.
"Don`t ask whats in it" he laughed.
"I`m pretty sure I`ve eaten worse, as long as its not rat" remembering the sight of roasted rat while on the ship, they reached the stall where a ladle of stew was put in each bowl, she picked up a thick slice of bread and a spoon and went and sat with her new companion, "do you remember anything, from before the ship I mean?"
He looked up from his bowl of stew the spoon handle poking out from his mouth, she had a flash of memory or maybe dream then it was gone, she watched him chew while stiring at the bowl of stew, mostly vegtables, she tried a mouthful, it was edible and was tastier than it looked, "nothing but maybe thats a good thing, nothing to do but get on with things here, I don`t see myself living here though..." he paused waiting for her to take a mouthful of stew "...what about you? remember anything?"
She couldn`t answer, she watched a grin spread over the face of her companion, slowly she slid the spoon out of her mouth and chewed after a long time swallowing "Swine, and no, nothing, maybe you`re right its better not to know, I got some jobs to do for Hojeen and Rwandi but after that I`ve no idea what I`m suposed to do" she jabbed her spoon into the stew and looked intently at before picking up the bowl and draining the remaining liquid.
"Well I`m thinking of striking out and building a little trading post, theres a lot of talk of attacks and enemies, it all goes over my head no idea what its all about, I`ll probably have to get some help to finish it, you going to eat the bread?"
She looked down at stale chunk "No you can have it, I`m going to head off now, get these jobs done" she stood up to go, he reached over the bench and picked up the bread dropping it into his remaining stew.
"Good Luck in your travels, I`m Stratosphere by the way" a huge hairy image flashed across her mind and was gone.
"Kyri, and Luck in yours too" turning away she left the camp.

Kyri headed north first deciding to hunt the White Wing Bats first and soon was in the wastes where their lairs could be found, it didn`t take long to get enough samples of the creatures to study, there were other bats and creatures of a more earthly realm in the area and none were fond of hiding when there was young leafborn flesh to feast on, there was a thrill in stalking her prey but more often than not her attempts to find a paticular specimen was thwarted by an attack from a diferent beastie.
It was the same in the forest, the creature she had been tasked to find eluded her and other new and exotic creatures attacked at every turn, her favorite moment came as she entered a small glade, always careful a movement made her jump back, the green forest reached for her, a huge insect darted toward her again, razor sharp front limbs slashed the air around her, ducking and darting through the scrub she rained blow after blow with her crude bastons, fortunately she was quicker staying out of the way of slashing limbs, at least most of time one had nicked her, blood tricked the beast moved she brought both the bastons down hard between the Giant Mantis`s eyes, there was a crunch and the creature colapsed to the ground.
Excited she hunted on through the day slowly fufiling each set of creatures she`d been charged with finding,a new sensenation filled her as she hunted the beasts on her list and those that laid ambush on her, she connected somehow with them, she could sense their spirits some were to strong for her to control but quickly her power over them grew, it was exhilerating and gave her a new goal exploring and collecting spirits.
Making a hurried camp for night before the light faded and darkness fell on the wilder- ness, staring up at the night sky filled with bright specks of light she contemplated how and where she had learned the skills used in making the camp it had seemed natural and effortless, she didn`t so much sleep as rest, before dawn she had left her camp behind and travel several miles northwards and into the wastelands her final task was to catch a crow spirit, it took longer than she thought it would and she suffered a few painful bites from Ardwolves and whipsnakes before achieve her goal.
It was getting late as she crossed the bridges that lead to the town and it was dark by the time she entered the gates of the small town of New Haven, quickly making her way to Rwadi`s office he was working on some documents and was very pleased with her findings and gave her a nice reward for her efforts, thanking him and assuring him she would be very happy to help again and call on her if needed, next she went Hojeen with crow spirit he requested, luckily he also was available and sat with her explianing a great many things about sorcery and spirits it intrested her greatly and finalised her new goals to concentrate her efforts on this aspect of the world, again giving thanks and offering her help in future.
Being late Kyri reluctantly decided to stay the towns crude bunkhouse area she was glad to find it had improved since last she had stayed but was still uncomfortable to her, she decided she would have to build her own home soon.

The morning came and Kyri was out and about before the streets became busy wandering around looking at what had changed tents had become shacks and shacks had become wooden buildings, as the sun began to rise shutters were opened, then doors, sounds of wood being cut, stone being shaped began to fill the air, here and there jobs were taking place to improve things, signs were being painted, metalworkers made hinges and latches and nails everywhere was becoming busy, she walked in the direction of the food hall it wasn`t far, she didn`t fit here among all these people it made her feel small, well being short for her tribe, if it were possible, smaller.
Stratosphere sat at a table breaking fast with a bowl of...surely not more stew, she walked over and grabbed a bowl, thankfully there were fruits and nuts, she filled her bowl with some and walked over to the bench and sat opposite Stratosphere, he looked up and gave his big grin, "Hello I didn`t expect to see you here again so soon, how was the hunting?" she stole a glance at his bowl, stew, she made a face. "Good, soo good.." animated by the memories of the last couple of days words spilled out one after another painting a scene of the events, "..and after Hojeen had finished it was too late to leave town so I stayed, and now I know what I want to do" she took piece of fruit and started to eat.
"So you are going to be a spirit collector?" Stratosphere looked puzzled, he imagined Kyri turning into cracked old witch, weird crystals hanging from her hair and skulls tied to her belt, he smiled. "Look I don`t fit here, it makes me uncomfortable, and you want to build something out there somewhere, I`ll help with it do my part all I ask is a place of my own to build my own space to study" she stopped going back to her nuts and fruit.
The leafborn sat back, "I`d be a fool to turn down help and I`m happy for you to have as much space as you need, just dont scare the customers away!" he laughed, "Don`t be hexing people and such"
"Hey I`m not like that I just need the wilds is all!" she frowned maybe she was odd all the others she had met out in the wilds wanted to become the best swordman, the best warrior, it was the hunt she loved, the catch, surely sorcerery wasn`t all that scary, she realised Stratosphere was speaking.
"Well you won`t be the only one helping a Dwarr named Kenshin has offered to help, in fact He`s out scouting for a place now, south I think" a smile played on Stratospheres face.
"A Dwarr? interesting" she thought about the Dwarrs she had met, they loved mountains she was afraid he would choose a place far from the forests, "I`ll go find him, see if I can help" she finished her food quickly

Walking southwards over the mountains Kyri climbed up to high spot looking southward out over the small naorrow band of forest below and beyond out over the plains and small wood she had already traveled too in the last few days, beyond lay mystery and wonder, a movement below her caught her eye it was a Dwarr she watched as he walked about a flat area of rock measuring with footsteps, propping up rocks here and there to mark where he had been, tapping on the ground with his pole then he stood very still for a long time looking out at the view, she made her way down to look around the place being surveyed.
The Dwarr turned and looked at her warily but said nothing, the area he had surveyed was even flatter than it looked from above a small stream ran along the north side and spilled over the rough cliff that bounded the small platau to west and south, it wasnt a hard climb or even that much of a defence but did aford a broad view of the lands around, she could smell the forest to the south and walked over to look down, the tops of trees were not far below, she smiled if she couldnt live among the trees this was the next best thing a few steps would see her among the leaves and surrounded by green she turned to see the Dwarr watching her still.
"I assume you are Kenshin, Stratosphere said you would be this way, I am Kyri and have come to help, I like this place" the Dwarr was a fraction shorter than she was but was twice her width and weight and she guessed probably twice her strength too.
"Aye, Tis a good place ta build, you likin` it don`t change it, not sure what help you might be, I`ll be needin` stone and planks ta start" the Dwarr glowered over his beard at her as if daring her to be useful, she thrust out her chin.
"You cut the stones I`ll see to the wood, no sense chopping down anything we dont need to" she stared back at the Dwarr refusing to break his gaze.
"Done and done, stone be mine, wood be yorn and we`ll share the buildin, maybe teach ya a thing or two before we`re finished, oh and ya`ll be callin me Mr Kenshin too" the corners of his mouth twitched just slightly he turned away from her ending the short conversation.

Kyri stared at the back of the Dwarrs head, the stare turned into a glare, turning she stormed her way down the rugged south slope, MR Kenshin indeed!, and in the short time it took her to get into the forest her temper seethed, she took out her stone axe and tried to select sutible timber to cut, "Bloody hell!, Oh bugger it!" it was no good she couldn`t concentrate on the task at hand, she threw down the axe and stood breathing in the smells around her, quickly she stashed all but her bastons and light clothing and ran off into the forest, ducking through thick undergrowth she felt as wild and free as the forest around her, allowing herself to melt into it, to become almost one with her surroundings, allowing the wild to take over, finally she felt herself calm.
Looking around a muddy patch caught her eye, moving over to it feeling the soft ground squidgy beneath her feet, an animal had wallowed here exposing the clay soil beneath the forest litter she carefully scooped some up and began smearing it over her skin, an age old instinct was guiding her hands, moving off she began to explore the bases of the trees nearby, soon she had gathered fungi and lichens of various colours and began to mix them and blend them with the clay, markings and images soon covered her exposed skin in various hues.
It took a long time to make her way back and retrieve her things, she didn`t redress in her armour but put her bastons with her small pile of belongings and picked up the axe that had been gifted to her not so long ago, she worked hard to cut many logs selecting carefully again which to cut and which to leave, she better success than before and had not wasted much, next she put down the axe and picked up the saw, this too had been a gift for her efforts in helping with first camp, it was harder sawing logs into planks but there was little waste, sweat had made some of the clay run the markings and images blurred a little but the colours remained vibrant.
Lifting as many planks as she could manage she began making her way up the slopes to the building site, after a stiff climb the level platau was a welcome sight, there was no sign of the Dwarr but a large pile of square stone blocks sat in the middle of site she walked over and dropped the planks next to it, she went to the stream and quenched her thirst, as she moved back across toward the southern slope a Cave Skeever bolted at her acting more by instinct she blocked with her right baston and brought the left down on its skull, there was a cracking sound and it fell back twitching.
"Buggers be everywhere, cannit move wivout trippin over the damned things, be chewin at everythin too" Kenshin was emerging from a small cave in the cliff that rose on the northeast side of the site a final twitch came from the dead Skeever, the Dwarr looked at it with disdain, "Wha happened ta ya?" the Dwarr looked her up and down looking confused.
"What you never seen a woodworker before?" she looked at the pile of stones the pile of planks seemed small, quickly she moved off "I`ve plenty more to get, Mr.." she caught sight of the Dwarrs face redden as he realised she had deliberately stopped short of his name but he stood still as the stones he worked, as she made her way down toward where she had worked the sound of bellowing laughter came from above...

It took six trips to fetch all the planks up to the building site, as she carried up the last load she was sore and aching, her markings were in smeared ruins, she dumped the planks on the large pile and wandered over to the stream to drink and wash, the afternoon had turned to evening the night was a couple of hours off, she stared off into the distant view, "tomorra we`ll be startin tha build Missy, best be gettin some rest if you`ve a mind ta help", she turned to look at the Dwarr, he was sat on a rock covered in a Skeever hide, he had a large mug of something and was looking out at the same view, there was something almost sad in the way he spoke.
"I`ve got to get my things, I`ll sleep in the forest tonight and be back at dawn" Kyri looked out at the veiw for a few seconds and turned to leave, down the now familiar slope she soon reached the place where she had left her things, gathering them up she quickly found a comfortable spot to rest the night.
Dawn found her back on the platau refreshed, though a little stiff from the previous days labours, she put her belongings down and wondered how it would be done, the Dwarr emerged from his cave carrying some rolled up hides and strode over to her, he quickly moved some stones and planks untill he had made a crude bench, then spread the hides out over it, lines measurments covered it, she could make out the rough pattern to the drawing but much of it was a mystery to her.
"Ya`ll be noticin tha we`ll be keepin away from the cliff risin up behind us, don`t want nobody droppin rocks on our heads, also be out of any danger of floodin from tha stream..." slowly and carefully he explained the survey and the plans to her, "so for today we`ll be buildin tha Mason Hut, now I`ll be layin the blocks an ya be fetchin em now ya have ta wait while I put the first one down fer luck, when I say start bringin the rest".
She nodded and picked one up and followed him to where the hut was to be built, he had put some buckets of water a what looked like ground stone in a pile in the middle of an area marked with sticks, stones and string.
"Missy, dont be askin how I know any of this, I aint got a clue" he mixed water with a little of the ground stone and set the first, "Now ya put yer hand on that block, feel the strength of it" she reached down and gently placed her hand on the cold stone the Dwarr held his hand on it also, "Dunno why but the first stone of buildin is always a special one, alright lets be havin the rest" she quickly brought block after block and watched as Kenshin laid them next or on top of each, sometimes he would stop and shape one a little to make it fit into its space.
Sometime after noon they stopped and had something to eat, a noise came from the west slope, a Giant walked up an stood on the edge of platau, almost twice her height and massive build he glowered down at her, she recognised him from hunting the wastes some days ago, "Greetings, How have things been since last we met?". "Me no remember me meet you" the Giant looked a little wary.
"In the little wood above the crow wastes" she answered.
"Oh yes. Me member,Me smash. Me grab. I drop things here that make me fat".
"Would you like me to keep a record and store the things for you?, we have only just started building a masonry hut".
"No. Is ok. If you like. Keep.I no skill. Or I try help. If not want. Someone else can keep.".
"Thankyou, sorry I havent any stew to offer , do you need healing?".
"No. I ok.Next time I come. I drop more things. I always holding my arms full".
"Hopefully next time I`ll be able to offer you some stew, do you enjoy hunting?".
"Yes. This is interesting world this one we land on.Exploring unknown is nice".
"I`ll be off into it again soon, I`ve enjoyed collecting spirits".
"There is sand. Far south and east. Is very nice for weapons with no skill,Yes. Very nice. I will be going back.".
"Good I have many of those!, Getting half decent with blowgun, but training bastons at the moment, and building".
"I can not wear one yet. I keep dropping it. Need more fast hands".
"I have the hands for them but need the skill".
"The sand I say. Go there. skill raise fast,Ok. I go try find man to give a ticket to. I see you later. My friend." the Giant walked across the platau, glancing at Kenshin as he passed, the Dwarr seemed to not notice, the Giant continued up the mountain towards New Haven.
"Safe travels!" Kyri called out after him, noticing the Dwarr putting down his weapon, he looked at her thoughtfully for while. "Now theres a surprise, I be thinkin ya be all wild an havin no time fer people, then you be all nice as pie ta a Giant, I`ll be damned if I can work you out Missy" Kenshin looked genuinely puzzled.
"Metwodhumm is his name, I met him a while ago as you no doubt heard" speaking softly she moved back to the stones to continue the days work.
"Ya be knowin tha most of his kind would gladly be smashin yers right?" the Dwarr put a hand up and stroked his bearded chin and asked, "Why be so friendly ta him and barely a word ta me missy?"
She looked at the Dwarr and wrinkled her nose thoughtfully, "well he never asked me to call him MR..." and the Dwarr roared with laughter.

Kenshin wiped tears away from his eyes, "Well ya speaks yer mind I`ll be givin ya that, but we best be gettin back ta work" he strode back to the partialy built mason hut and picked up a couple of empty buckets, while he carried them over to the stream Kyri got a block of stone and put it ready for building then got another and another, by the time Kenshin returned there was a line of stones waiting for him which gave her some time to watch the Dwarr as he mixed up his stone powder and laid each block, he noticed her watching, "tha thing is if ya pick up a block ya use tha block it`ll fit somewhere.." he continued talking and she continued listening, when he began to run low on blocks she got more and he showed her a better way of stacking them, better to save her back and his he told her, by the time evening came the hut was finished.
"Not tha finest I`ll be grantin you but twill be stood here after ya and I be gone with any luck", the Dwarr pulled a rag out of his tunic and mopped at his brow, "wouldnt be this far on if twernt fer ya help, Ya may be scrawny but ya puled ya weight an tha is best ya be gettin out of any Dwarr, Missy".
"Thankyou, Mr Kenshin" the leafborn girl had seen the Dwarrs affinity to the stone he worked, she understood that as the forest called to her the mountains called to him, as her tribes nature was to sway with the wind, his was to stand firm against it, once you understood that, then appreciation could be found.
"No need fer ya ta be callin me Mr anymore missy, ya keep workin tha way ya are an Yall have earned the right to skip the Mr, see we Dwarrs demand respect fer our craft just the way we be" the Dwarr strode over towards the stream with her, she had noticed Dwarr did not walk or amble, they strode everywhere.
"Well I`ll call you Mr anyway, seeing as how you call me missy" she grinned, they reached the stream, she dropped her few items and was only wearing cotton clothes as it wasnt realy feasable to wear armour while working, she waded into the cold water and sank down beneath it, letting it wash away the sweat, dirt and dust, when she could no longer hold her breath she stood up and waded back to shore, dripping wet she stood in the remaining sunlight to dry.
"Yall catch ya death" the Dwarr was washing at the edge of stream, she wondered if he was becoming cleaner or the water becoming dirtier, "I`ll be heading up to the town tomorra be needin a few things, we got tha hut now so we can store stuff in tha dry, be needin a lot more planks fer tha next build"
"I`ll head down to forest, I got a nice warm place down there, start making more tomorrow, I might head to town in a couple of days" turning she run off toward the forest before the daylight faded.

Days past chopping logs and turning them into planks and carrying them up to the site that would become their small trading post the mason hut was joined by a large Hall which could hold the bulk of the supplies they were gathering, they were long hard days of toil, Kenshin cut blocks managing the site, measuring and marking the ground, He and Stratosphere talked over designs and methods, Kyri understood little of this listening intently as though she did, plans for an Inn and a forge, a watchtower would be added to the end of the Hall closest to the southern cliff edge.
"Thats where I`ll have my dwelling, its close to the forest" she looked out over the trees below.
"It`ll be tha first thing ta be attacked from tha way, better ta be tha other side by tha cliff" the Dwarr pointed an outcrop in front of the northeast cliff.
"Too rocky, and this view is better" she insisted looking at Stratosphere.
"Maybe Kenshin has a point, we should think about safety" the leafborn was looking out over the forest and beyond the lands far to the south.
"Realy?, pretty much everything out there is trying to eat me or squash me, I`ll take my chances on the cliff, besides I`ll sleep down in the forest mostly anyway" she laughed at them.
"Be serious missy, aint nothin ta be jokin about" the Dwarr looked genuinely worried.
"Mr Kenshin, where will the summoning chamber be built?" Kyri asked.
The Dwarr pointed to the southeast cliff edge "Yonder, tha way anythin nasty comes out its got somewhere ta go away from me"
"Exactly why I should be right there near to it" Kyri smiled and winked "just in case"

Kenshin looked long and hard at her absently reaching up and stroking his beard, he looked for a moment like he was going argue but then sighed, "Well if ya made yer mind up, tha best of it be ta build tha chamber there and yall have yorn set next ta it, be stronger tha way missy" the Dwarr pointed here and there making new marks, Stratosphere moved over to help.
"What exactly is this summoning chamber?" the leafborn looked over at Kenshin, the Dwarr stooped, picked up a pole and leaned on it.
"missy has it in her head ta be messin with spirits, ta do tha ya be needin a summonin chamber, tis a safer place ta be dealin wit stuff like tha", the Dwarr turned toward her "safer dont mean safe though yall be rememberin tha missy"
Stratosphere looked stunned "What the hell, this sounds dangerous, I mean.. just why?"
Kyri looked thoughtful, her nose twitched, "Well firstly its what I want to study, and secondly none of us know why we came to be here, no one person I`ve spoken to, maybe I can find out this way" she didn`t know if anyone cared what happened before the ship, to be honest she wasn`t sure she cared that much, but the knowing how to do certain things without any memory of how she knew was like an itch in her head, "maybe there arnt any answers there, but sooner or later we are going to meet things that use these elemental forces I`d like to be prepared sooner"
Kenshin and Stratophere stared at her, the Dwarr stroked at his beard, Stratosphere had no beard to stroke, for a second she had an image run through her head of Strat stroking the Dwarrs beard as well, she kept her face straight, finaly the Dwarr broke the silence.
"I recon ya got a point missy, an my not likin it don`t change it, an I don`t like it I tell yall tha now" the Dwarr dropped the pole down, "an it`ll have double thickness walls too"
"Alright, but I`ll live there by the Hall and the Watchtower, close enough to help if needed" the leafborn smiled, "Don`t want to miss any fun"
"Thanks Guys, the view realy is nicer here, and I promise I`ll be careful" she saw them glance at each other "Hey! I will realy, I realy promise"
